Have you been wondering, “where are the flat benches”? Many of you up until this point in your training careers have spent numerous hours on your backs and asses doing the bench press in an attempt to gain some sort of superior level of fitness. From what I have seen in many of you who have used bench press as a prime movement in your routine, there is a large

Have you ever asked yourself why your doing CrossFit? Is it to get stronger, look better on the beach, make you a better mom/dad, help you do things around the house easier, help you prepare for life? CrossFit will have an enormous impact on all of the above. By nature, CrossFit is what we call – General Physical Preparedness (preparation for the unknown and unknowable). As you may or may

I know I have discussed this topic before, but it is worth mentioning again -Learn how to squat, and learn how to do it good! “Regardless of what the problem is, the answer is to squat.” Those are the words of CrossFit founder and CEO Greg Glassman. “People who do not know how to squat do not have normal hip function, don’t have normal leg functional,” “They can’t jump, run,

How many of you guys and gals can touch your toes? I want to take a moment and talk about mobility and fitness. Guess what – they go hand in hand. I bet that came as a surprise to some of you! Hope everyone got out there to enjoy another gorgeous New England weekend. We have an exciting week lined up with a few new classes making way into the line-up. We are also looking to open up our pro-shop with some really cool products. We are looking for all artists out there to help with some interesting new logo ideas. I am contemplating having a contest to see who can come

Inflammation is experienced by everyone, whether we are doing things right or wrong. It is a matter of how we control it which is a the most important part. Eating poorly can contribute to an increased state of inflammation as well as consistently training at a high level of intensity constantly taking our bodies to the limit. We can easily fix the eating part by making healthier choices, however, for

CrossFitting along with a solid diet made up of meats and veggies, nuts and seeds, fruit and little starches, is in my opinion as well as the rest of the CrossFit community, the best way to build lean muscle tissue, get stronger, burn excess body fat, and prepare yourself for the rigors of life. I won’t rant any longer because I want you to read this article I stumbled upon

It was brought to my attention tonight that not everyone is getting in on all the fun we are having daily. To be more specific, the people who are only coming once or twice a week are not getting in on the barrage of different exercises we do daily. Here at CrossFit Magnitude, each and every day will be something new. If you come consistently over a long enough period

Today officially marks the 1 month aniversary of our opening day class. During this time period, we have taken you through a countless number of exercises, performed in constantly varied workouts over many different time periods. As you may have noticed, we never do the same workout twice – with the exception of infrequently used benchmark WOD’s which pop up from time to time for the soul purpose of measuring

I know most of you reading this are rather new to the ‘Sport of Fitness’. As you get more involved in CrossFit, what we call ‘getting the bug’, you may find yourself tempted to workout out more often than usual, pushing yourself to even greater levels than once imagined. To keep yourself performing at a top level, you must listen to your body very carefully. Some days you may

Thanks to everyone who stopped by this weekend to lend a hand, we really made some great progress! The boxes came out awesome! A few finishing touches and we’ll be ready to start adding them into the mix this week. To touch on another subject, I’ve been noticing a wide array of footwear being worn by everyone. Believe it or not, footwear really matters when it comes to CrossFitting. At

Just want to say, GREAT JOB to all of our members thus far in their journey towards being more healthy, fit people! Hans Selye once said, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger”. A brief explanation of the adaptive changes at the cellular level, caused by CrossFit training, will help you understand how intense CrossFit workouts will result in an improvement of your fitness. We have known for centuries that when the human body is presented with a sub-lethal dose of physical, pyschological, or chemical stress, it can adapt to

Im going to keep this short and sweet. The Bruins are all tied up in game 7 of the Stanley cup playoffs as they head into the third period in just a few. Speaking of hockey, have you ever wondered how fit these guys are? In my opinion, they are in good shape, but pale in comparison to a solid, well rounded CrossFitter! How can I get away saying that

Hey fellow Magnitudes! A few things to update you on tonight. First off, we ordered even more new equipment! With enough to go around now, we can start incorporating some great dynamic exercises

The new schedule is set! Hopefully there is a class time scheduled that will fit everyones busy day. As you may have noticed, there are a lot more beginner classes than anything else. This is self explanatory. As more people start ‘Testing out’ you will start to notice less beginner classes and more ‘regular CrossFit’ classes. Class size will remain capped at 10 until more coaches are available. This is

Whether you are new to CrossFit or not, there will come a time when you will have to question your integrity. It is human nature to want to be better than your peers and finish first. At CrossFit Magnitude, we like to think of the community as an extension of our immediate family. This means we love your presence when your working out or just hanging around. Don’t ever think that just because the workout is over, you have to go home. Feel free to hang around after class to chat it up with the coaches and pick our brains, work on mobilizing that trouble area,

Here at CrossFit Magnitude, as well as any other CrossFit box, we like to keep things constantly varied. This means that you should not dwell on the workout performed today hoping you may see it again sometime soon, rather focus on what lays ahead tomorrow. Also, keep in mind we like to do things hard and fast, and keep it short and sweet. As Coach Glassman said “At CrossFit intensities

Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize husband and wife, Jimmy and Jane B., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How did you two first hear about CrossFit Magnitude, and what made you decide to join as a couple?
We were looking for a gym after we bought a house in Pembroke this summer. We both decided to join as a healthy way to spend time together.
What were your initial thoughts about CrossFit, and have those changed since you started?
We initially thought it may have been ‘unwelcoming’ because of the level of fitness, but have been SO happy with how welcoming the community has been to us. We always look forward to coming to the gym.
How has working out together impacted your relationship?
We ask each other “have you seen today’s workout?” A lot!
Do you motivate or push each other during workouts? If so, how?
We are motivated by seeing each other succeed and accomplish new goals in the gym.
What advice would you give to other couples considering starting CrossFit together?
Treat it as a fun hobby! We look forward to going together and feel like we accomplished something together after a class.
What’s one thing you’ve each accomplished in these first few months that you didn’t think was possible?
Jane is crushing toes to bar!
Do you have any friendly competitions between each other in the gym? Who usually wins?
Honestly we don’t but we are both doing a 10,000 step challenge together! 10,000 steps every day until the end of the gym’s holiday challenge. Sometimes we are walking the dogs in the dark at 10 pm.
After a tough workout, who’s more likely to suggest a treat or a meal out?
Jane wants to go to brunch after every Sunday class!
What are your fitness goals as a couple, and how has CrossFit Magnitude helped you get closer to them?
We totally agree with Chris – as we want to lead lives that are healthy all around and lead to better quality of life. And as newlyweds we want to look good for each other of course!
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Caitlin S., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
What first brought you to CrossFit Magnitude, and what were your goals when you started?
My husband Mike had been going for a couple years and thought I would enjoy the various workouts. I didn’t have many goals when I first started.
How did you feel walking into your first class, and how did that change after your first workout?
Walking into any class for the first time can be intimidating, but the welcoming coaches and members set my nerves at ease.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting at CrossFit Magnitude?
Overall strength and energy levels.
What is one thing you wish you had known before starting your CrossFit journey?
All the movements are scalable and lifting weights doesn’t make you bulky. I was a runner for years and never touched a weight.
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about starting CrossFit?
You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. One foot in front of the other. Come through the door and give Magnitude a shot! You’ll be glad you did 🙂
Tell us something most people do not know about you?
I LOVE to cook and host friends and family. In the warmer months you can find me on the beach with a good book. I love a good game of cribbage and vacuuming. Cold Chardonnay is the best!
What are you up to when you’re not at CrossFit Magnitude?
Mike and I have 3 teenagers and 2 Berners that keep us pretty busy. I also work at JOLI Med Spa. Best place on the south shore. Come check us out 😉
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Brendan M., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude?
About six months. I joined at the beginning of April 2024.
What do you most look forward to each time you come to workout at CrossFit Magnitude?
I enjoy all the workouts. When I I complete each workout I feel like I accomplished something that I would not have been able to do a year ago. That is a great feeling.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting your fitness journey at CrossFit Magnitude?
Since joining I feel stronger. When I do other activities such as mountain biking I have a higher endurance and have also noticed that my blood pressure has gone down. All good things!
Now that you’ve been training for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into a CrossFit gym that you now disagree with?
I had worked out in a Crossfit gym prior so I knew what to expect. I enjoy the sense of community that Crossfit provides as well as the supportive environment that comes with it. The people you are working out with are willing to help and encourage. It’s the opposite of a “Planet Fitness” type environment.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first time and/or new members getting started?
Some people say Crossfit pushes people past the point they are comfortable with which can result in injury. That misconception could not be further from the truth. Every workout is scalable. At Crossfit Magnitude the coaches will work with you to find what works for you and make sure you are working out in a safe manner. They want you to succeed on your fitness/health journey.
Tell us something most people do not know about you?
I have citizenship in the USA as well as Ireland.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
I enjoy mountain biking and going to concerts. Both things I’ve been enjoying most of my life.
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Bob S., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude?
I’ve been coming to CrossFit Magnitude for a little over 9 months now.
What do you most look forward to each time you come to workout at CrossFit Magnitude?
The feeling I get when I am all done training. I feel ENERGIZED!
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting your personal training journey at CrossFit Magnitude?
According to my primary care physician, she said that going to CrossFit has been a real game changer for me. All of my important numbers – blood sugar, heart rate, blood pressure, etc…have all normalized.
I started at age 71, weighing 320 pounds. I am down 80 pounds, now weighing 240 pounds. The doctor told me to get surgery, or change my lifestyle, so I met with Chris and the rest is history!
Now that you’ve been personal training for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into a CrossFit gym that you now disagree with?
I didn’t know anything about CrossFit before getting started. I was told by a friend/another current member of CFMagnitude that this was the place to go if I wanted to change my life for the better.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first time and/or new members getting started?
I recommend trying CrossFit because it is a total fitness routine, and the individual attention is great due to the caring coaches here. Whether you are in a group or training individually, you will get the help you need to achieve success.
Tell us something most people do not know about you?
I really enjoy life, my family, and my boat “Half Throttle”.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
Working, playing with my boats, motorcycle, and taking my wife out to dinner.
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Alyssa M., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
On, off, then back on for about three years now. Left prior Crossfit gym a few years back looking for something more challenging. I did go back to them briefly due to missing my friends, but came back to Magnitude shortly thereafter. My prior gym wasn’t pushing me hard enough; I love that Magnitude isn’t afraid to! Heard through word of mouth / proximity to home.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
Overhead Squat, Wall Walks
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I feel like I can see some abs on a good day! First time in about 20 years that I don’t mind looking at my stomach.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I didn’t have any, but I have since heard medical professionals say they don’t like/support Crossfit because it injures people. Perhaps Crossfitters are more prone to injury, but not because of the programming or the philosophy; because it’s a group of people that want to push the limits of their body and see what they are really capable of, and derive personal satisfaction from that. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion!
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Give it a try if you’re looking for something more than a populous, generic, mundane group workout. I like the intimacy of Magnitude, the camaraderie, the personal attention from coaches, the variety of the workouts, and the challenge. Best feeling in the world is the moment the workout is over! (Meaning incredible sense of accomplishment and pride.)
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
My toes are always ice cold during workouts. Actually I complain about that a lot so people might know!
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
My work is demanding but flexible so no complaints. I have three girls: 11, 12, 14, so afternoons and weekends are hectic. I ski, camp, and travel quite a bit!
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
Thanks for being there so that I can compete against you, even if you don’t know it 🙂
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Mandy B., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
In March 2016, I came to CFM when my old CF gym closed and many of the members of 545 came to Magnitude.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
I like the gymnastics movements and deadlifts of course!
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
MUSCLES!!!! Have def acquired some of those. And I’ve learned how to pace.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I thought I couldn’t do it. I was just a mom, who up until then considered exercise running at the gym and an occasional kickboxing class. Weights? No way! Turns out everyone can do it.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Walk through the fear. It’s the only way to get to the other Side. Crossfit is known for its awesome Communities! We will walk with you!
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I’ve lived all over the place. Texas,Iowa, Colorado, Arizona, California, Florida, and here. I can’t ride a bike. Every time I attempt to, there is an injury. I once ran into a stationary sign in the middle of a sidewalk and ended up in the middle of the street.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
I’m a mom to a 14 year old and a 12 year old. They keep me pretty busy.
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
Y’all are awesome!
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Sofie C., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
I have been at CFM for 10 years this February. I was always active, but really struggled to be consistent (You can ask my husband about the various gym memberships that went stale after a couple of months). When we moved to Hanover, 10 years ago, I was looking for a gym and saw a groupon for a free Crossfit class at another gym and really liked it. I checked out other Crossfit gyms and dropped into CFM. Before the class started, there was a member who was 8 months pregnant doing wall balls and thought what a badass she was for working out and I really had no excuse not to come.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
Most movements with a barbell (except for deadlift and bench), but my favorite is a Clean and Jerk.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Initially, I didn’t want to do any of the Olympic lifts/barbell movements because I didn’t want to get bulky and preferred cardio/HIIT workouts. Now I realize the older I get, I can’t simply do 45 minutes of cardio and need both cardio and strength training to maintain my body weight. Honestly, I prefer strength training and sometimes it’s a harder workout than a 45 minute cardio class.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Every movement is scalable and there are many movements that I still can’t do, but as long as you come and try it, you will see progress. I would just listen to your body and know your limits. If there are movements you are not comfortable with, there are many alternatives that have the same stimulus and coaches do a great job helping you.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I rowed a semester in college and absolutely hated it. I only did it because I just transferred to Umass Amherst and thought it was a great way to meet people. Fast forward, rowing is probably my favorite cardio activity at the gym and I have a rower at home (Covid purchase).
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
My two kids Siena (8) and Caleb (6) keep my husband, Ivan, and I pretty busy between sports and their social calendar. They were born and raised at CFM so they are junior members at the gym and you will see them swinging around on the rig. We love doing things with the kids, but Ivan and I are excited to get back to our favorite past time traveling. We have a trip to Iceland scheduled this spring, without the kids!
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Ashley W., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
Almost 2 years. When I got stationed here I saw there was a CrossFit gym not far away from my apartment.I googled the name and that’s where I began.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
Bench press and push ups
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I have gained more muscle and got rid of a lot of body fat..I feel great once I leave the gym.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
This is a great community to be a part of. I came here in October 2021 not knowing a single person in Massachusetts. They took me in, made me feel welcomed and now I have a family. This is definitely a group I will never forget.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I am a big fan of country music lol
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
Work or at home watching Hulu catching up on my favorite shows.
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
Hands down one of the best groups I’ve ever been a part of..Keep being awesome!
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Mike S., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
7 years. I was talking to a friend of mine about back pain from running and he suggested I go to Magnitude. With some mobility work, the pain was gone within a couple of weeks. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
Nothing in particular. I like all of the variation that the programming provides and METCON type workouts in general.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I’ve gotten stronger, more mobile, and feel better as opposed to what I was doing prior to joining. I’m more conscious of my diet and sleep, which remains a work in progress. Progress not perfection.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I knew little to nothing about CrossFit prior to joining, so no initial misconceptions. I hear people say that as you get older it’s not good to be doing heavy weights or intense workouts but I disagree. I think it’s important to be smart about how you approach a workout and take the time to recover as needed.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Just go. People will help you. And the friendships made are the best part.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I’ve traveled to 26 different countries, lived in 4 states, and crossed the pacific ocean twice on a ship. Now I prefer to not leave New England.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
When I’m not working, I spend time with family and friends. I like to build stuff and do home improvement projects. And I’m looking forward to the NFL season and the fall.
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
keep up the good work!

How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
Since Feb 2022, one and a half years! I googled and CFM seemed like the best fit for me.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
The rope pull, because I can do it now! In the beginning I couldn’t, maybe one day I’ll do the rope climb, ha!
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Everything is easier now – stairs, walking, making the bed, showering! (You know what I mean if you’ve been obese) I feel all around so much better and healthier, looking better too 🙂
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I had no idea what I was getting into, everyone told me I couldn’t do it/fat people couldn’t do it, I’d have things thrown at me etc. That is all not true. Anyone can do it and it’s a great environment with supportive people.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
To not be afraid, be excited! Anyone can do it regardless of their condition. Everything can be tailored to your ability level which will allow you to progress and succeed. You will improve your health, feel better and look better too.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I’ve sang on stage with Rick Springfield? I lived in Alaska for 10 years? I have a wonderful son who is a retired USMC Combat Veteran? And I just got married last year! I’ve had a bit of an adventurous life 🙂
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
I love to spend time with my husband, son, father and three cats 🙂
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
I’m just very happy that I joined CFM and stuck with it instead of quitting. I hope to progress further.
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Melissa F., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
Eight years. A friend of mine had just joined and she convinced my sister, brother in law and me to give it a try.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
I can’t say I have one favorite movement…I definitely like quite a few, even the ones I struggle with! If I had to choose I’d probably say deadlifts and squats of any kind.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
CrossFit has taught me that there’s not a one size fits all approach to health and fitness. Anyone can attain health and fitness, all they need to do is show up and be consistent. I’ve always loved to exercise but I never felt truly strong and fit until CrossFit.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I don’t agree with the theory that CrossFit causes injuries…any form of exercise has a chance of doing this if you’re not smart in the way you perform it. The coaches at CFM are great and super helpful which definitely allows injuries to be avoided.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
I’d say anyone interested should just go out on a limb and give it a try. There’s definitely something for everyone….8 years in I continue to scale movements and know there’s some I’ll never master but an alternative is always available…I was able to work out until the day before I had my daughter because of all the scaling options.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I’m actually not as quiet/socially awkward as I am at the gym…in high school I was voted best dressed and class gossip (the gossip part was definitely rigged by a friend!)
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
I’m spending time racing around with my three littles to all the activities they’re involved in, spending time outside and at the beach, and soon we’ll be adding a puppy to the madness.
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Josh M., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
Since 2015, my brother James had brought me to a class.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
Muscle Ups
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
My overall physical fitness is still improving – turns out working back/biceps at Golds Gym every day doesn’t do much for ya
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
Injuries – going into CrossFit I had heard that heavy weight/high reps for time would cause nasty injuries but if you approach each workout sensibly, you’ll be fine.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Going to the gym should be fun and a good stress outlet – if you can keep that mindset, you will probably stick with it.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I used to be very involved with Big Brother Big Sister. When I started, my Little Brother was 9 and next week I’ll be going to his High School graduation – time flies.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
Raising my two boys, Gus and Hank.
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Ashley B., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
I have been at CFM for almost 6 years. We moved cross country and I literally knew no one. I had been doing crossfit for more years than I care to admit to. I knew that I needed to find a CF gym that I could find my friends in also. I tried Magnitude one time but ultimately bought a membership at another gym. I did not like it and it was just not “my home”. After feeling a little defeated, my coach back in Oregon told me that I needed to give Magnitude another chance. He said that Chris was very qualified, and he thought it would be a better match for me. I talked Chris into letting me try the gym for a week and I have not looked back!
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
Deadlifts and Kettlebell Swings
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I was actually a long distance runner prior to CF. I ran my first marathon and was miserable. Qualifying for Boston in that race I knew that I would have to add some weight lifting because I needed more gas in the tank to make it easier on myself. I am in the best shape and always have been since starting CF. Everyday presents a new challenge and it always has me coming back for more.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
That you get “bulky”. I think most of the time people say that based off seeing the professional athletes. They spend 8 hours a day in the gym and they have little fat on their bodies. You can alter anything to become more conditioned, stronger or muscular.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Just do it!! I found some of my best friends at CFM. People that cheer me on every day in and out of the gym. You won’t regret it.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I once was fluent in sign language. I haven’t used it for so long but I can understand if I do see someone signing. You guys pretty much know everything about me. I am an open book!
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
I am a mom to two girls, 13 chickens, 1 duck and a dog. I work for a west coast company selling countertops part time. I also own my own small Etsy business and sell stuff in a few local stores. I basically wear many hats on any given day!
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
Thank you for having my back for all of these years. Through the good, bad and the ugly. We all survived covid and working out in the parking lot together (I can’t tell you how much this saved my sanity daily). I am grateful for my CF family!
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Shayne B., who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
7 years. September 2015 was my first class. I used to live down the road from the Box.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
I do enjoy deadlifts and presses, then conditioning workouts with box jump-overs and pull-ups.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Stamina for sure. It has helped keep me lean and has taught me proper lifting techniques to help avoid injury that are also applicable to everyday life.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I only heard negatives about how Crossfit creates injury… totally wrong. Just don’t be a jackass and listen to your body.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Don’t think we’re all snobby heroes who are athletic specimens and freaks of nature. We’re average joes who love to mingle with each other, be slightly competitive, and work on ourselves.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
That long beautiful head of hair was donated to Children with Hairloss. 16” gone like that. Also- getting married 12/3! Come crash it!!
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?

How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
I have been a member at CF Magnitude for about 4 years. My wife, Tina, was a member for about a year and convinced me to give it a try. I finally did and really enjoyed it.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
I enjoy power cleans, but really anything that isn’t a burpee is fine with me.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Crossfit has introduced me to using muscles that I didn’t know I had. I have noticed a huge improvement in my core muscles, explosiveness, and flexibility.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I used to think that Crossfit was only for elite fitness people. I quickly found that every workout can be scaled to any level of fitness.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Don’t be afraid to scale the workouts to a level that you feel comfortable with, while at the same time challenging yourself to get stronger and more fit.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I worked at Disney World for a year.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
Watching our daughters play soccer or compete in gymnastics, helping Tina on projects around the house, hanging out with friends, or I am working as a firefighter in Boston.
Each month, CF Magnitude recognizes a community member for all their hard work and dedication and what he/she brings to our community. We love our community and want to let everyone know about how great each member is to us. This month we recognize Bryan F. who you can learn a little bit more about below.
How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
11 years. I actually attended a pre-opening open house and still have the free OG t-shirt to prove it. I attended my first workout the 2nd or 3rd day CFM was open. A spin class believe it or not!
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
Squats, Deadlifts, Bench Press, Power Cleans, Strict Press
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
It has changed over the decade plus I have been at CFM. Initially, I lost about 25 pounds and I was very focused on that aspect of fitness–losing weight, running, cardio, and getting leaner. In recent years, especially after a few years training in Courtney’s (and now Dan’s) great strength programs, my focus has been on building old man strength and setting new PRs on lifts. One of the great things about CrossFit is we get experience in so many competencies of fitness, that we can find our niche and really go after it, while also staying honest by still doing at least some of those things we might not like as much (gymnastics for me). Without a doubt, CrossFit and CFM have improved my health tremendously, even though my nutrition is suspect (not CFM’s fault!).
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
1. CrossFit, training with intensity, and lifting heavy weights is not dangerous or a recipe for disaster. Yes, it can happen, but you could end up just as hurt playing basketball or running 5Ks. CrossFit is something you can do for years, well into middle-age. I have done it and feel great, and as many of you know I hate stretching, warming up, and the very word “mobility”.
2. Nutrition is (almost) everything–you cannot out train or outwork a bad diet. I have been trying for 11 years, with very limited success!
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Ask for help. Your coaches and fellow members have a wealth of knowledge and wide range of experience, and we are all in this together. Do not get frustrated and give up because you can’t do everything–very few can. Keep working, scale as needed, and celebrate every success you have. I could dwell on the fact that after 10 years in the gym I still can’t do toes to bar and muscle-ups, but instead I choose to celebrate that I’m stronger at 46 than I was in my 20s, and feel my best years are ahead of me.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I am the President of the booster club for Marshfield High School Basketball (Boys and Girls), so I spend a lot of time in a different sort of gym during the winter sports season. It is very rewarding though to help the students (my two daughters included) have a great high school sports experience.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
I do a lot of hiking with my dog, Tweety, a rescue from the Caribbean. We have been on a quest since 2020 to complete the Bay Circuit Trail and only have a few miles to go. Unlike my teenage daughters and lovely wife, she still likes to hang out with me (I think). I have found that hiking and long walks in the woods are great “active recovery day” activities for both physical and mental health.

How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
I have been here for 5 months. I drive by your place to and from work and decided to stop in and check it out.
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
I enjoy the cardio based workouts but I’m really starting to like deadlifts.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I feel much more motivated and energetic. My clothes fit a lot better. I just feel better in general 🙂
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I always thought just super fit people could do CrossFit but what I have realized is with a positive mindset and dedication anyone can do it!
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Definitely worth trying out. Giving yourself time to adjust to a new style workout.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I drive a cool 6 wheeler Peterbilt and I love it!
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
Working and being with my wonderful family.
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
My favorite part about CFMagnitude is the people! Having people enjoying the same things as you makes it more fun and enjoyable:)

How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
I joined Crossfit Magnitude shortly after the doors opened in 2012. I heard about CFM through another coach at the time, Caitlin Chisholm. I tried a few classes and was immediately hooked, never looking back!
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
I really enjoy working with a barbell to build strength, especially as I am cruising through my 50s. I enjoy front/back squats, clean & jerks and push press. My absolute favorite movement to perform with a barbell is a thruster. You work your entire body with this one movement.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I am by far much healthier, stronger and more confident trying new things in my 50s than I was back in high school or my 20s. I have also dialed into my nutrition thanks to Crossfit Magnitude. I have taken advantage of the various seminars, nutrition programs, and strength clinics offered at CFM over the years. Having the In-Body Scan available in-house helps to keep me on track with my goals for muscle gain & fat loss.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
Crossfit is NOT a “cult”. Every movement can be scaled to your ability, and anyone, at any age or stage of their life, can crossfit!
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Consistency will be your best friend! Leave your ego at the door, and keep showing up! Over time, you will definitely see your body change and improve. The other piece of advice I would offer is do not compare yourself to others, as we all have our own unique journey through life! There is such a positive & supportive vibe here at Magnitude. I feed off of the energy here when working out.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I tend to be an open book for the most part 🙂 That said, I recently dusted off my old guitar and plan to take lessons again in the near future!
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
When I am not at the gym, you can find me at the blueberry farm, animal shelter, or up in New Hampshire climbing a mountain 🙂 I have 4 peaks left to accomplish my goal of hiking all 48 4,000 footers! I would not have the confidence to tackle this particular goal without the benefit of crossfit.
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
It truly has been a blessing to be a part of this amazing community over the past decade 🙂 I will always be grateful for the friendships formed, the coaches, and the inspiration provided along the way of my fitness journey!

What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Joining CrossFit Magnitude has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in the last 10+ years when it comes to my health.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
It’s not a cult… it’s a community. And you don’t need to be a games athlete. You can scale anything and everything to your fitness level, and there is never any pressure to do more than you are capable of or want to do. Everyone has different goals and those are respected throughout the gym.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Take it slow. Learn the movements and lifts. If you don’t hit your fitness goals as quickly as you want, just be patient because ultimately in the end, what you are doing in class will have a positive impact on you.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
attI am the 3rd of 4 boys in my family (all 18 to 20 mos apart) and didn’t speak until I was about 5 years old. My mother brought me to South Shore Hospital to be tested for deafness, but turns out the Doctor said I can hear just fine, and for my older brothers to stop speaking on my behalf, as they would always answer for me when my mother asked me anything.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
I am very much involved in coaching youth football, basketball and Lacrosse in Marshfield. I also run the Marshfield youth lacrosse program. When we aren’t at an activity, we like to spend time with family and friends.

Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
One misconception I had coming into CrossFit was that I had initially thought you had to be super fit and I have learned that you do not, and anyone can join and enjoy every workout by scaling it to their skill level.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Definitely give it a try. It is amazing working out with such a great community.

How long have you been at CFMagnitude and how did you hear about us?
I’ve been at CFM for almost 2 years now!
What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?
I like to be challenged and to constantly push myself so I like the gymnastic movements. I swear gymnasts are some of the strongest athletes.
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Before starting CrossFit I didn’t workout at all so I have noticed a total transformation in my body composition and muscle. I am in the best shape of my life and fitness has become a priority for me.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
The term “CrossFit” is intimidating to people. The stereotype is a “hardo” who throws heavy weight around and maybe reckless in movement. The truth is, the workouts are scalable for all fitness levels and interests. It’s the perfect combination of HIIT workouts with strength training and you never need to touch a barbel if you don’t want to!
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Show up and be consistent for 1 month. You will notice a considerable difference in energy levels and fitness performance and will be hooked!

Deadlift
What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Over the years I have become stronger, improved my endurance, and felt more empowered to take on both physical and mental challenges in and outside of the gym. At 46, I am the strongest I have ever been.
Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?
I have heard cautionary tales of Crossfit causing injury. I actually feel quite the opposite, in that by increasing my muscle mass, I have avoided injury.
Any advice to people considering coming to CFMagnitude for the first Spotlight Athlete of the Month Heather S. time and/or new members getting started?
Do not let your fear, anxiety, or other people deter you from sticking with it. Crossfit Magnitude is an amazing community of supportive people, and this is one of its many benefits.
Tell us something most people do not know about you.
I’m training for my first marathon in November, NYC.
What are you up to when you’re not at CFMagnitude?
Being a mom of 2 boys, Ian(14) and Harrison(11), and 3 kitties(Fitzy, Leo and Cowboy). I work as a VNA social worker. I love to travel, hike, paddleboard- basically anything that involves being outdoors. I am close to hiking all 48 4K mountains in New Hampshire.
Anything else you’d like to share with the CFMagnitude Community?
I have been inspired by so many members’ stories of what they have had to overcome, and their deep personal commitment to prioritizing their mental and physical health. Another perk of Crossfit has been spending time with members outside of the gym enjoying like-minded activities.
