Double Unders… To some those two words send shivers up the spine and reminders of stinging red zebra stripes across the legs and arms. But it doesn’t have to be that way forever. If you look here, the Double Under works numerous muscle groups, they increases metabolic capacity, and certainly hone our coordination and agility. This is why we do them, they are not a torture mechanism for Coaches, honestly.

“So when will I get these darn things?” is a question I commonly get, and my answer is often formed in another question; “How many minutes have you put into practice today, yesterday, or the day before?”… (actual minutes is what I’m looking for) A key to getting your Double Unders is TIME on the rope. Putting in that extra 5 minutes before and after class, coming to Open Gym and working with a Coach, purchasing your own rope and drilling at home… Quality time is what you need. Warning: Don’t be deceived by “perceived” time. I see it every day and have for years. Athlete X will grab rope and start working; miss, miss, whip, miss, whip, grimace, whip, grimace… “I’ll never get these darn things, F it!!”…and throw the rope against the wall. Elapsed time 2 minutes. Now to Athlete X that 2 minutes was an eternity, but in reality it was 120 seconds. Time on the rope folks, it may take hundreds of attempts, it may take thousands, so the quicker we get those attempts in, the more concentrated the practice sessions…the sooner your Double Unders will come. Promise. Look at the clock, set a time goal, don’t quit on the goal…repeat.
