Stay Hydrated

Reading a recent blog post in the CrossFit.com  forums, I was reminded of the fact that we need to stay hydrated all the time, but even more so as clean eaters.  Whether you eat strict paleo or some off shoot there of, it is common to suffer from dehydration from a lack of carbs and sodium.  Every time we eat a gram of carb our body stores  3 grams of water.  So in essence carbs keep us hydrated.  If you were to follow the Atkins diet, you would notice very fast how much weight you lose – water weight that is.  As soon as the carbs are reintroduced, the water makes its way right back into you.  It is analogous to putting a sponge in water (eating carbs), soaking it up (storing water from carbs)  and then wringing it out (going on the Atkins or any carb-less diet).   Also, eating non processed foods means you are taking in less sodium, which is good, but can be bad if you do not add it back to your good healthy foods.  Sodium allows us to hold water better in the cells, so a lack of it will cause dehydration.  As a rule of thumb, it is a good practice to drink 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight.  So if you are 200 pounds, 100 ounces of water a day would be your minimum, not including extra consumption for high intensity exercise.  If you have an questions whatsoever regarding hydration ask one of your coaches for some advice!
