Spotlight Athlete of the Month

1. Member name: Patrick Kelliher or just PK

2. Age: 37

3. Occupation: union carpenter

4. How long have you been a member at CFM? Just about 10 months now.

5. How often do you CrossFit? It started with only about 3 times a week, but recently I’ve been coming 5-6 days a week.

6. Do you remember your first WOD? Looking back, how did it go? I don’t remember it too clearly because I choose to misremember things that cause me to cry at night.

7. What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform? The movements that i like the most have been changing throughout. I like the movements that I finally get right or right-ish….like right now I like doing pull-ups and cleans.

8. What has been your biggest challenge to overcome so far? Just getting out of my comfort zone when it comes to my range of movement and how far I can push myself. I find I can go just that little bit longer or little bit heavier each week.

9. What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit? I was coming into this in what I thought was close best shape I could be, but I started this journey weighing in around 215 and now I’m hovering around 185. My diet hasn’t really changed too much in that time either.

10. What has been your biggest achievement thus far, and what do you believe has been critical to its success? Just to see constant improvement. I love the fact that even 10 months into it I still enjoy coming as often as possible, not just for the workout, but for the excellent people that I’ve met along the way.

11. What do you hope to achieve in the next 6 months, and how do you plan to get there? I want to keep the ball rolling and keep improving my stamina and increasing my strength. Specifically I’m going to start focusing on getting a true HSPU and muscle-up under my belt. And maybe have some resemblance of a consistent double-under.

12. Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with? I always would hear of the injuries caused by people doing CrossFit. I realize now most can be easily avoided. There is no one forcing you to go beyond you capabilities and the coaches are there to focus on the proper form to ensure major injuries doesn’t happen.

13. Any advice to new members getting started? Take it at your own pace, don’t force the issue. An ego will cause a serious injury faster than anything else.

14. What are your hobbies outside of the CrossFit box? Part of the reason I got into this because I have a small addiction to the adventure/mud runs, tough mudder, spartan, etc.. This helps me prepare for the next challenge, which I’m finding more of unfortunately.

15. Tell us something most people do not know about you? This one time in band camp….umm….I like long walks on the beach and the sound of rain on a hot tin roof….umm.…my favorite color is blue……I don’t know, I’m a simple man. I love spending time with my friends and family. The perfect night is having friends over, that I get to cook for, play some games or just sit around a roaring fire in my backyard with some tasty adult beverages.
