How long have you been a member at CFM?  4 years

How often do you CrossFit?  2-3 times a week

Do you remember your first WOD? Looking back, how did it go?  I’m not 100% sure, but I’m thinking it involved deadlifts and box jumps. I remember it kicked my butt though. When it was over I felt terrible and amazing at the same time. I realized then that all the workout routines I’d done in the past were a joke.

What is/are your favorite movement(s) to perform?  Running and rowing….any kind of shoulder press, deadlifts, power cleans, box jumps.

What has been your biggest challenge to overcome so far?  Anything upside down. Snatches. Pull-ups!!

What sort of changes to your body, health & fitness have you seen since starting CrossFit?  Stamina for one. I think about tasks I do around the house or yard, and how it takes me a fraction of the time now, and at the end I don’t feel burned out. Strength as well. I’ve been able to hit PRs doing the Crossfit total and similar WODs, and that is extremely motivating. I also pay more attention to what I eat and how I feel when I change my diet. My cholesterol levels and blood pressure have also been much better since I started Crossfit.

What has been your biggest achievement thus far, and what do you believe has been critical to its success?  Last summer doing the Magnitude total (finding 1rm back squat, deadlift, and shoulder press), I not only hit new PRs, I easily surpassed my previous bests. I attribute it, primarily, to the basic attitude that you develop doing CrossFit. Always thinking that you can do more, that there’s always a little more in the tank. Don’t be afraid to fail. If you miss a lift, it probably means you’ve given everything you possible had.

What do you hope to achieve in the next 6 months, and how do you plan to get there?  Improve toes to bar, pull-ups, overhead squats (and by extension, the snatch) and maybe my first HSPU. How do I plan to get there? A lot of time on the rig before class. Patience, practice, determination…all that stuff.

Now that you’ve been CrossFitting for some time, are there any misconceptions you may have initially had coming into CrossFit that you now disagree with?  I didn’t know much about CrossFit before I started. I do see things written about CrossFit in a negative way…mostly about people getting hurt. But it’s the same no matter what workout program you do. If you try to do too much or have bad form, you’re going to hurt yourself.  Listen to your body, listen to your coaches, and swallow your pride. No one cares how much you can lift.

Any advice to new members getting started?  Listen to your coaches. Ask questions. Realize that finishing the WOD last is just as impressive as finishing first. Every rep counts. Leave your ego at the door. You are only competing against your former self.

What are your hobbies outside of the CrossFit box?  I have two young kids, so that’s most of my free time. But I also enjoy craft beer and discovering new music.  Tell us something most people do not know about you?  I’ve been a guitar player for almost 30 years (I guess that could have gone under “hobbies”). I don’t get to play as much as I’d like with the kiddos around, but it’s still my favorite way to blow off steam (besides Crossfit, of course). The plan is for the next house to have a “music room” where I can go and make a nice racket when I need to!
