When I ask people who have never participated in a CrossFit WOD before what they know about it, the response I usually get is ” Its wicked hard” or something along those lines.  I wouldn’t argue that point.  CrossFit is hard!  But anything in life that offers such great reward is usually harder than average to obtain.

CrossFit isn’t just about putting yourself through a challenging workout.  CrossFit is a way to prepare yourself for the rigors of life – As Coach G says “We are preparing for the unknown and unknowable”.  Lets take a look into the handstand push up.  If you have never done one before, you should try it sometime (get some valid instruction before hand).  What you will first notice (besides the fact that they are rather challenging) is that you get this massive rush of blood to the head.  You become disoriented, your eyes become flush with blood, and when you right yourself  you need to take a moment to figure out where you are and what just happened.  The funny thing is, once you have done this a few times, that disoriented confused state you once experienced is no longer a result.

Now you must be wondering, how does this apply to my life.  Well, lets think of some scenarios where you may end up inverted.  Your driving home from a nice dinner where you indulged in a few glasses of wine and out jumps a deer.  You swerve of the road to save a life and end up in a ditch rolled over.  The car is on fire and you have mere seconds to figure a way out.  But wait, you’re disoriented, your eyes are bloodshot and you can’t see, never mind tell which way is up or down.  What do you do?

I know this sounds far fetched, but I personally know of two different occasions where this happened, and neither had a happy outcome.  If live or death was the difference between having a couple hand stand push ups or not, wouldn’t that be reason enough to start preparing?  Now this is just one example.  Just understand that every single movement we perform in CrossFit is to help prepare you for life, your job, and anything in between, otherwise we wouldn’t do it!

If you are confused or unsure of what we do here at CrossFit Magnitude, come by some time and we would be more than glad to answer any questions you may have.  We look forward to meeting you!
