Go Spot an Owl

I just want to touch on spotting at our box for a brief second.  Don’t do it!  The weights we are using are meant to be dropped and based on some of the things I have laid witness to already, I think it is safe to say that we will all be far better off if we just stand clear while someone is lifting a really heavy weight.  I am not saying that if the bar is stuck on someones chest during a failed bench press attempt, that you can’t help them get it up.   I am speaking more on the lines of when someone is squatting hundreds of pounds and you’re just standing behind them waiting to be crushed when they bail and dump it behind them – ON YOU!  In my opinion, some lifts just aren’t meant to be spotted, like any version of the press or an overhead squat.  You are just asking for trouble.  And if you are assisting someone, pay the #%&@ attention!  In a CrossFit box, a lot is going on all the time.  It takes just one second of being in LA-LA Land to end up underneath someones failed attempt at a heavy load.  Don’t be that guy/girl! Stay alert – Stay alive…

Here is a great video of what not to do if you ever decide to spot someone (in someone else’s gym of course).  Also pay attention to the kid who is attempting the lift.  This is a great lesson of Man vs. Pride where man gets his ass kicked in.  Try not to wet yourself!
