True Human Performance Can Only Be Measured Through Feel

Hello CFM. Happy Weekend to you all. May it be a good one full of fun activities now that the summer is coming to an end….you can sense it in the air.

Speaking of sense, lets talk about that. Last week we talked about Free+Style and what that meant in terms of our movement practice. We brought up the point of Observation and how important it is to be able to be aware and able to observe movement …and more importantly have an observer present for your own movement if progress is what you seek.

Today however we are going to talk about how you can become your own observer. Being an athlete in a CrossFit class is an amazing experience. I mean where else do you have a group of experts teaching highly skilled movements in a fun environment….do you think you would have casually picked up Olympic Lifting in your garage? …probably not. It may not feel this way at first, but being a student of movement is relatively easy when you have an observer coaching you through the process (less room for error) but how do you become your own observer?

Well Luckily you have your own sense to guide you. In the same way an outside observer (like a coach) watches you move, you too have the ability to feel and assess how you are moving. This is a powerful tool that is intuitive and natural.

Have tight hips? Well you don’t need us to tell you that. You can already sense that every time you attempt an air squat when you have to fight to keep your heels on the ground. Here is the problem though. Once we step outside the gym, most of the movements you perform in our daily lives are automated. In other words you don’t have to think about it. When was the last time you thought about the position of your foot when you were walking, or picking up your groceries? …most of us don’t think of these things. We have lost our sense for it.

“You can use your senses to guide your body in relation to the environment” (Free+Style) …be that a CrossFit box or grocery store. As soon as you make the conscious decision to be aware of how you move at a physical level, you can begin to make an accurate assessment of your own performance. This is the next step to improving your ability to move. In this sense, you are your own coach.
